HAVEN:
VETERANSCOMMUNITY
WELLNESS CENTER

There are a total of 18.2 million veterans in America with 900,000 located in the state of New York. 40% have been deployed more than once. With this repetitive exposure to battlefield and field conditions, mental health is often neglected. Mental disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and bipolar/depression are common among veterans of all ages. In fact, veterans account for 30% of the annual suicides In U.S.

In our design, we prioritize the mental health of occupants through community based and inclusive design. By avoiding materials commonly found in combat such as concrete and stone, we aim to support individuals that struggle with flashbacks and
PTSD. By utilizing warm textures, soft materials, and calming colors, our goal is to evoke feelings of comfort, safety, and security. With the use of said materials, we also aim to reduce noise

levels, even when community and discussion is involved.

We believe our space is well-equipped to be a sanctuary for veterans that struggle with mental health.
